Students who wish to appeal a disciplinary action related to academic dishonesty must submit a written appeal in the form of a letter (electronic or hard copy), any other documents or evidence to support their case, and the names of any supporting witnesses to the assistant to the VPAA (acadaffairs@cottey.edu) within ten class days of the sanctions being imposed.
The appeal materials will be routed to the President or the VPAA, as appropriate. The VPAA (in cases regarding a faculty decision) or the President (in cases regarding a VPAA decision) will contact the faculty member(s)/VPAA and request relevant documents, evidence, and names of witnesses. Requested materials should be sent to the assistant to the VPAA within five class days of the request. If the student does not provide a written appeal, any other documents or evidence, and names of witnesses within ten class days of sanctions being imposed, an Academic Appeal Committee will not be formed. If the faculty member(s)/VPAA do not provide relevant documents, evidence, and names of witnesses within five class days of the request, an Academic Appeal Committee will still be formed.
Academic Dishonesty Sanctions Appeal Process:
- The student will submit a written appeal (electronic or hardcopy) to the assistant to the vice president for academic affairs (acadaffairs@cottey.edu) within ten class days (i.e., days in which class are in session) of the sanction(s) being imposed. At that time, the student will also supply any other documents or evidence to support their case and the names of any supporting witnesses.
- The vice president for academic affairs or president (as appropriate, see above) will convene an academic appeal committee (see “Academic Appeal Committee” for composition of the committee).
- Student appeal materials are shared with the course instructor, and a response from the instructor is requested from the chair of the Academic Appeal Committee. The instructor will provide a response, along with any relevant evidence and names of witnesses within five class days of the request.
- Materials provided by the student and the instructor will be shared with the Academic Appeal Committee after receipt by the Office of Academic Affairs.
- The committee will consider only the materials which have been submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs.
- The Academic Appeal Committee will submit their recommendation to the VPAA no later than 20 class days from the receipt of the written appeal.
- The VPAA will notify the student of the final decision within three class days of receiving the Academic Appeal Committee's recommendation.
The VPAA’s decision is final.
