Special Education

​​Cottey College’s Special Education major prepares students for professional practice by supporting individuals with a wide range of learning, behavioral, and developmental needs. Students who complete this major may be eligible for initial teacher certification in Mild, Moderate, Cross Categorical. The program emphasizes inclusive and individualized practice grounded in educational law, ethical and professional responsibility, and data-informed decision making, with a strong focus on collaboration among educators, families, and community partners. Students develop skills in assessment, analysis of student data, and the design of instructional systems and behavior interventions to support student growth while engaging families as active participants in the special education process. Additionally, coursework addresses transition processes, including career readiness and post-secondary planning. It also prepares students to communicate effectively with families, foster family engagement, and connect caregivers with community resources. Through progressive field experiences and student teaching, students apply theory to practice in partnership with schools, families, and community organizations. ​
