DAN 107: Dance Appreciation
Credits 4Introduces dance as historic, creative and communicative art form. Explores elements of dance through philosophical reading, writing, discussion, and observation.
DAN 110: Beginning Dance Technique
Credits 2Introductory Western concert dance technique course in the ballet, jazz, and modern genres. Intended for students with little to no previous experience. Emphasis on development of basic skills. Performance of short dance phrases using fundamentals. May be repeated for credit.
DAN 120: Traditional and Social Dance
Credits 2Course offers students with any level of movement experience the opportunity to learn traditional and social dances from a variety of cultures. May be repeated for credit.
DAN 136: Musical Theatre Dance
Credits 2Course offers students with any level of movement experience the opportunity to learn choreography from stage and film musicals. May be repeated for credit.
DAN 145: Improvisation
Credits 2Course offers students with any level of movement experience the opportunity for creative exploration of spontaneously generated movement. May be repeated for credit.
DAN 150: Beginning Yoga
Credits 2Introduction to yoga postures. This course, while respecting and peripherally touching on the other aspects of yoga, will focus on the physical practice of postures. The course will emphasize safe body alignment and personalizing one’s practice. Participation in this course will lead to increased strength, flexibility, and balance.
DAN 155: Beginning Tai Chi
Credits 2Introduction to Tai Chi, a gentle physical activity. The exercises in this course can be completed standing or sitting in a chair. The course will emphasize safe body alignment and personalizing one’s practice. Participation in this course will lead to increased strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance. May be repeated for credit.
DAN 200: Dance Company
Credits 4Rehearsal and presentation of concert works by faculty, students, and guest artists. May be repeated for credit.
DAN 201: Introduction to Choreography
Credits 4Study of elements of time, space and energy. Explores concepts of phrasing and structure through solo movement studies and group compositions.
DAN 210: Interm/Advanced Dance Technique
Credits 2Intermediate/Advanced Western concert dance technique course in the ballet, jazz, and modern genres. Intended for students with previous dance training. Emphasis on increased technical abilities, more complex movement combinations, and enhanced performance qualities. May be repeated for credit.
DAN 250: Yoga Practice
Credits 2Ongoing, informed practice of yoga postures. This course, while respecting and peripherally touching on the other aspects of yoga, will focus on the physical practice of postures. The course will emphasize safe body alignment and personalizing one's practice. Participation in this course will lead to increased strength, flexibility, and balance. New poses, beyond the Beginning Yoga course, will be introduced. May be repeated for credit.
DAN 281: Interm/Advanced Improvisation
Credits 2Continued exploration of spontaneously generated movement. Experiences will include site-specific work and student-designed improvisations.
DAN 288: Focused Project in Dance
Credits 2Faculty guided independent study of a dance topic of the student’s choosing. Enrollment in this course is limited to students pursuing the Dance minor.
