ART 110: Mokuhanga & Sumi Ink Painting

This course introduces art techniques specific to East Asia. One part of the course focuses on mokuhanga, a Japanese style of printmaking that uses water-based inks and the other half covers sumi ink, a type of black ink wash painting which is practiced in Japan and China. Students will learn to properly use tools and brushes, make paper, carve and print woodblocks, and employ color theory to compose creative compositions. An overview of the history of art in parts of Asia will also be covered.
